Abstract

In 1999 a community oral history project was initiated to document cultural and historical knowledge of Aboriginal Elders at Laura. In the course of the project it was found that people preferred to relate stories by returning to special places to which they are personally connected. The project widened to include documentation of these places which were previously 'unrecorded'. From this work a map of cultural landscape and a finer-grained community history is emerging, based mainly on community values and relationships. A range of historical and cultural significance values for various places have been identified and insights gained into what constitutes 'a sense of place'. The map of landscape and other results of the project indicate that a cultural landscapes approach offers an appropriate model for heritage research and Australian archaeology. Community-based archaeology is recommended as a way of developing conceptual frameworks and methodology that is more culturally sensitive and appropriate to the complex cultural systems of Australian Indigenous societies and to community aspirations.
