Abstract
It has been widely recognised that wear particle analysis is one of the most effective techniques for monitoring the condition of machinery, as wear particles are a direct measure of the wear processes and damage occurring at interacting machine surfaces. An established technique used to study wear particle characteristics in relation to wear processes and phase of machine wear is microscopy. However, existing computer-assisted microscopy techniques are limited in that only two-dimensional (2D) boundary information with limited three-demensional (3D) surface information can be obtained for wear particle analysis. Recent developments in 3D imaging and image analysis techniques have been shown valuable in providing 2D and 3D wear particle information for machine condition monitoring using numerical analysis techniques. In this paper a comprehensive study of surface and boundary information of wear particles generated by a group of industrial gearboxes is presented. This two year project has provided interesting results on the group of industrial gearboxes despite the fact that it is much more difficult to study industrial machinery over laboratory test rigs. This project has demonstrated a great potential for applying 3D computerised analysis techniques in monitoring industrial machinery.
