Abstract

The natural convection in a reservoir sidearm subject to daytime surface radiation was visualised in the laboratory using a shadowgraph technique. The water temperatures along the sloping bottom were monitored simultaneously with thermistors. The experimental Grashof number based on the starting water temperature and the bulk attenuation coefficient of water was fixed at 4.16x10 7. Emphasis has been put on the understanding of the initial flow features after the radiation was applied. In particular, the instabilities originating from the thermal boundary layer along the sloping bottom have been observed and discussed.
