Abstract

[Extract] The beginning of a new year is seen in many cultures as a time for individuals to reflect on the past year. It is a time when many reflect on the highlights and low points of the past year, and look forward to, and make plans for, the year ahead. The beginning of a century generates widespread reflection, contemplation and prediction not only at the level of individual lives but for whole societies. The beginning of a millennium, not surprisingly, is associated with even more contemplation about the future and analysis of the past. The years 1999 and 2000 offer an almost irresistible opportunity for academics to research and write about the history and future of their area of interest. The editors and contributors to this book aim to ensure that tourism, both as a human activity and field of academic interest, will be recognized as an important part of this dialogue.
