Abstract

This paper looks at the Townsville Division of General Practice and the links that we have with stakeholders in the local primary health care sector for examples of the characteristics of firms and stakeholders that are usually found in well functioning local regional industrial clusters.

We first do a preliminary review of the literature on the characteristics of regional clusters and of the involvement required by individuals, organizations and the region to transform the local challenges of a rapidly changing competitive environment into a sustainable, competitive advantage that creates value and cultivates a vibrant, healthy regional economy.

At the end of the paper, first, we conclude that after the work that we have done for this paper, we are optimist about the future for the Townsville Division of General Practice and the other stakeholders in the local primary health care sector.

Second, we make recommendations for further research that might help us cultivate our vibrant, healthy regional economy. We focus specially on assisting practitioners in the primary health care sector. A significant first step in this future research is a regional needs analysis.
