Abstract
This paper shows how a particular group of individuals living in a very remote part of Australian territory-researchers and support staff at the four Australian owned and operated research bases in Antarctica: Mawson, Davis, Casey and Macquarie Island-obtained their news and informational content in mid-2002, in the complete absence of a large commercial media operation, by using innovative applications of digital and more traditional technology.
