Abstract

This report describes interdisciplinary research work carried out to describe the rehabilitated ecosystems developing at the Rio Tinto Alcan Gove Mine, NT (RTA Gove) (12º 16’S, 136º 51’E). It should be noted that on October 2007, Rio Tinto assumed ownership of Alcan and formed Rio Tinto Alcan of which Gove is a part. The system of rehabilitation used at RTA Gove has changed little since 1973 and is described by Hinz (1992; 2007). The results presented here are primarily based on two periods of field work conducted at the then Nabalco Mine site between the 16th of September and the 2nd of October, 2001 and from the 29th November to the 3rd December, 2001. Post wet season field work was conducted between the 20th May and the 1st June, 2002. Analysis of the samples collected was carried out at CSIRO and University laboratories in Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney and Townsville.
