Abstract

This article is adapted from the World society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) animal welfare syllabus, Concepts in Animal Welfare, module 26, 2007. The aim of the syllabus is to introduce the concepts of animal welfare to the field of veterinary science world-wide. This article describes some applications of animal welfare science as it relates to environmental enrichment over a range of species. Principles and types of enrichment will be discussed, as will the use of animal training as a form of enrichment. Much of the information has been drawn from Rob. J. Young's book, Environmental Enrichment for Captive Animals, published by Oxford: Blackwell in 2003.
