Abstract

Creature A group exhibition by artists from the Cairns region which explores the nature of the creature, whether destructive force of nature or gentle loving spirit, through a range of different media.

Body Blow The seasons are a creature whose moods emphasise the ephemeral nature of human mortality. Through our place on this land, through the imagination of place and identity, we are embodying histories in motion. The weather reaches the smallest things; and as a creature its presence, at times, is beyond care of inhabitation or emotion issuing a body blow to humanity.

Research Statement

Research Background Advances in media arts technology have drawn closer traditionally disparate modes of expression in a convergence of media and performance. While interactive technologies have focused on personal viewing devices and the development of an interactive games industry, artists have been modifying these technologies to produce live interactive experiences for their audiences.
Research Contribution The collaborative work Creature / Body Blow by Campbell, Milledge and Youdell exemplifies the use of live and mediated expression in terms of their convergence in a real time moment. The ephemeral quality of the live performance and the performative quality of improvisation further establishes the use of devices for triggering and interactive feedback to real time media and digital asset sources.
Research Significance This research is significant as it places the live improvisational movement performance within a matrix of mediated space. The proprietary development of this mediated space as a human / computer interface is also successfully moderated by the presence and focus of the live movement performance. The work has been included in the exhibition program of Umbrella Contemporary Arts, Queensland , Australia.
