Abstract

Over one third of all women worldwide is estimated to have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse at some stage during their lives. Sexual violence committed against women is particularly prevalent and damaging during times of armed conflict. SV has been documented in every recorded war and genocide. Conflict-related SV tends to take particular forms, including rape, gang rape, sexual torture, sexual mutilation and forced abortion/pregnancy. People of all genders experience SV, but in this policy brief we will be focusing on women who often bear the brunt of victimization. To support healing from trauma resulting from SV, victim-survivors need to experience justice and agency. Justice for victim-survivors comes as a complex endeavor, including (but not limited to) the need for truth recovery, reparation, validation, vindication, and/or empowerment.
