Abstract

This research note explores what happens to tourism in heritage places when a cultural community relocates due to the encroachment of tourism--spawning the development of another cultural ‘heart’. Does the tourism industry stay in place, or does it eventually follow the living culture? Our analysis focuses on the main streets of Kampong Glam and Geylang Serai in Singapore, two centres of Malay culture. We compiled secondary data with observational techniques to explore if tourism has moved from the packaged experience of Kampong Glam to the everyday landscapes of Geylang Serai, thus following the living culture. We suggest that models of tourist district life cycles could be extended to add a new category: relocation.
