Abstract

Specialist accommodation operators located near protected areas are a growing niche market. This paper presents a profile of the owner-operators of this nature-based accommodation sector in North Queensland. Some 101 accommodation operators of bed and breakfasts, farm stays, caravan parks, cabins, cottages, licensed public hotels, backpacker hostels, retreats and ecolodges were surveyed. Bed & breakfast, cabin and cottage operations are a popular style of accommodation. The owner-operators average 49 years of age, are relatively evenly distributed across education levels and their reason for operating a specialist accommodation is commonly for a change of lifestyle. For unknown reasons there is a sharp decline in operating time of a specialist accommodation establishment after eight years. Research of this sector, particularly in Australia, is scarce and this paper attempts to contribute to an understanding of this alternative to mass accommodation style.
