1,4- (H2LI) and 1,3-phenylene (H2L2) linked bis-j3-diketone ligands as well as corresponding metal complexes of composition M3(Ll)3B6 and M2(L2)2B2 with B = pyridine (Py) or 4-ethylpyridine (EtPy) have been synthesised. Extraction studies involving the systematic variation of the metal, bis-Bdiketone and 4-ethylpyridine concentrations have been performed for CoCIl) and Zn(II) in order to probe the solution stoichiometries of the extracted species. Significant synergistic effects were observed when EtPy was present along with the bis-.8-diketone ligand in the organic (CHCh) phase. Competitive extraction studies Cwater!chloroform) demonstrated a clear uptake preference for CuCII) over CoCII), Ni(IJ), Zn(Il) and Cd(II).
