Abstract

This chapter identifies and explores the major issues encountered by health professionals working in developing countries where resources are scarce, services are minimal and community awareness of disability is informed by differing belief systems. Increasing opportunities for professionals to work in resource-poor communities highlight the need for consideration of theories of community development and sustainable programs. In this chapter, readers are provided with a case example of the experience of a professional group of staff and students, in this instance occupational therapists, working on an island in Papua New Guinea. The description of the experience explores the salient issues of access, individual and community needs and cultural differences relating to communication, occupation and the meaning of disability. Specific case vignettes are included to illustrate these issues more powerfully. Analysis is provided by relating the experience to theories of culture, occupation, primary health care and sustainability. The chapter concludes with consideration of the importance of reflection on practice and the benefit of the experience to working in any culture, including one's own.
