Abstract

Mediation Awareness Week has events running in the USA, UK and across Australia to showcase how mediation is used to resolve disputes, and how mediation can benefit businesses, communities and individuals. The objective of Mediation Awareness Week events is to grow awareness, knowledge of, and use of mediation across society. It is also for practitioners to showcase their approaches to dispute resolution. In Townsville, we are well placed to be able to learn and apply mediation skills. James Cook University hosts the Conflict Management and Resolution Program, that runs the only practical Masters of its kind in Australia. Focusing on practitioner skills sets, the CMR program at JCU is academically grounded and practice orientated. It is taught by practitioners who are also engaged in research, program design and evaluation. This presentation will talk about mediators relevant skills and knowledge. Specifically around the nature of conflict, the dynamics of power, communication patterns, negotiation dynamics, cross-cultural issues, listening, questioning, reflecting, summarizing, managing high emotion and supporting fairness, equity in mediation, and creating a feeling of safety for the mediation to occur.
