Research Statement

Research Background These works of art seek to extend research into how ideas about the natural environment can be bought to light. Ideas such as the demise of the Great Barrier Reef are abstract concepts. Works of art represent these concepts in a visual form and this can generate greater understanding.
Research Contribution These works of art make a contribution to the understanding of how we can gain knowledge. The visual impact of a crown of lurid objects that resemble an infestation of crown-of-thorns may remind us that our land use practices have resulted in run off that has overloaded the water with nutrients and lead to crown-of-thorn infestations. This has created a damaging scenario for the coral in the Great Barrier Reef.
Research Significance The research is significant because it communicates the facts of climate change science in a manner that enables people from various walks of life to understand the veracity of the situation. The work was seen by an estimated 4,000 people who use the track for recreation.
