Abstract

[Extract] Kampa languages belong to the Arawak language family. Scholarly knowledge of the Kampa branch is rather significant, comprising a comprehensive body of academic literature published in the last six decades.1 Considerable advances in the studies of Kampa grammar have been made in the last decade on the basis of focused field research.2 However, full-scale grammars of many Kampa languages are still lacking, making tentative the generalizations proposed in this survey of Kampa. In spite of Kampa's well-established profile, the issues concerning the names of Kampa languages, membership and internal classification are still far from resolution. Academics vary in the designations of the language family, its branches and language names, e.g. Arawak vs. Maipuran, Campa vs. Kampa(n), Asheninca vs. Asheninka, Caquinte vs. Kakinte. Regarding the membership, the consensus is that the core of the Kampa Arawak subgroup comprises Asheninka Pichis (Pi), Alto Perene (Pe), Asheninka Pajonal (Pa), Ucayali-Yuma Asheninka (U-Y), Ajyininka (or Asheninka) Apurucayali (Apu), Ashaninka (Asha), Caquinte (Ka), Matsigenka/Machiguenga (Ma), Nanti (Na) and Nomatsiguenga (No) (see Map 25.1). A putative member of the Kampa unit is South Ucayali Asheninka.
