Abstract

The project aims to look at and record the evolution of mixed marriage in Townsville over the last 150 years as well as the history of war brides who settled in the area. It investigates the role that mixed marriages played (and continue to play) in shaping a harmonious and prosperous community and highlights the role of multiculturalism in the continued economic, social and cultural growth and diversity in Townsville.

This report is now part of the Local History Collection of CityLibraries Townsville. The project was accompanied by an exhibition of 22 interpretive panels on the 150 years of mixed marriages and war brides in Townsville. The panels were exhibited at the Thuringowa, Aitkenvale and Flinders street CityLibraries, and at JCU Mabo Library between 21 September - 15 November 2016.
