Abstract

[Extract] We thank Burnett and Calton for their interest in our work on Chironex fleckeri venom. However, we have significant concerns that they have focussed on the use of verapamil, and not discussed this in relation to the value of antivenom and magnesium. Importantly, the recommendation of verapamil treatment for severe jellyfish stings in humans, based on animal experiments, cannot be made lightly considering the severe adverse effects of verapamil in patients with cardiac decompensation. We have demonstrated in our study that verapamil worsened the outcome when given in conjunction with antivenom.
