Abstract

[Extract] The experience of pain and the quality of rest and sleep are factors that can have a significant impact on an individual's health. Both are unique personal experiences that influence all other aspects of an individual's health, including physical wellbeing, mental status and social functioning. This chapter explores the nature of pain, the importance of rest and sleep, and the nursing care required to assist people to maintain their optimal health when the presence of pain or a rest/sleep disturbance threatens to compromise their health status.
