Abstract

[Extract] The role of the health professional has changed, with community health promotion and primary health care now being seen as a 'bottom up' and 'inside out' approach rather than something imposed from above and outside by experts. Health professionals now need to be able to work with communities as partners in improving health and wellness. This requires a broad understanding of the social, cultural and ecological factors which influence health. In this book, McMurray attempts to provide a basis for an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to health and wellness. Like previous texts by Anne McMurray, this book is designed for students who intend to become health professionals in community settings, as it focuses on the social and ecological aspects of public health and primary health care. This does not, however, replace texts on the sociology of health.
