Abstract

[Extract] 'Why don't men treat women better?' asks McMahon (p. 31). Despite earlier hopes the New Man is an outdated media myth and the highly acclaimed, sensitive new age guy is an aberration now being replaced by more 'robust' images. In this, his first book, McMahon recharges the controversial domestic labour debate. He starts with the fact that it is clearly in the interests of men to resist pro-equity changes and maintain the sexual division of domestic work but, unlike other discussions, he goes on to ask how they manage to continue to dominate.
