Abstract

Health in Australia could be considered part of our national success. Over the past several decades national health has become so important that it is not only reflected in policy and political debate, but it is also reflected in national and international media from tourism campaigns to Hollywood movies. However, health in Australia, and the health of Australians, have a far more important role than looking good in the media. Understanding the health of Australia as a whole, and also understanding the health of different population groups within Australia, is reflected in health funding, health programs and the promotion, development and future health outcomes - both ndividual and population-based.

This chapter explores the mechanisms for collecting the information used to assess the health of a nation, as well as examining some of the data used to evaluate the health of Australia. This chapter also provides a snapshot of several unique population groups and explores the relationship between health data, health policy and health outcomes.
