Abstract
[Extract] Humans are exposed daily to numerous microbes (invisible organisms present in the environment) in our homes, on our body, on the food we eat and on things we touch; they are a daily part of our lives. Some micro-organisms perform essential roles in the environment by decomposing and recycling nutrients. Others are used to produce food; some live on the human body; and unfortunately others cause disease (Lee & Bishop 2012). Lee and Bishop (2012) stress that an understanding of the interaction between humans and micro-organisms and the environment in which we live is essential for health care professionals.
