Abstract

[Extract] Summary of findings

Description of current remote sensing methods and data available to map flood plumes, water types and pollutants (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, total suspended solids) in the Great Barrier Reef.

Surface exposure maps produced for the dissolved inorganic nitrogen, total suspended solids for the period 2007 and 2011. Exposure maps provide an indication of the influence of these contaminants in the Great Barrier Reef.

Calculation of three exposure categories of high, medium or low risk, mapped from the five equidistant categories reported under MMP (Devlin et al., 2012, Alvarez-Romero et al., 2013). Three classes were reported to align with the current risk assessment.

The variation in areas reflects the differences in the dispersal of pollutants and the locations of the ecosystems. There are substantive differences in exposure of different ecosystems to terrestrial pollutants in relation to the natural distribution of these ecosystems, as well as to the differences in the movements of pollutants.
