Abstract

This work focuses in the study of the hydrothermal alteration mineralogy related to the Pitaloza Au-(Cu) deposit, Azuero Peninsula, Panama. The study area is constituted by volcanic rocks of the Azuero Volcanic Arc, of Cretaceous-Paleogene age. The geodynamic setting, and the interaction between volcanism and magmatism perform the ideal conditions for the generation of ore deposits in the Azuero Peninsula (e.g., Cerro Quema, Juan Diaz and Cerro Viejo). Pitaloza is considered as a high sulfidation epithermal deposit, where gold is found associated with the oxide zones (1-6 g/t Au; up to 30 g/t Au), and copper is found below the oxidation zone (0.25-0.61 %Cu). The main objectives of this study are: 1) to characterize the hydrothermal alteration mineralogy, and 2) Estimate the hydrothermal alteration/mineralization temperature of the Pitaloza deposit.
