Abstract

[Extract] When asked to review Carol MacLennan's new book on the Hawaiian sugar industry, I eagerly agreed to the task. I was aware from my own work that many interactions occurred between the Australian and Hawaiian sugar industries, the latter being considered by the Australians to be quite innovative in certain aspects of sugar production. Indeed, as the author notes, the Hawaiian sugar industry 'during the twentieth century became the most efficient sugar producer in the world'(p. 31).
