Abstract

[Extract] Specialised maternal and childhood health services are available in both Australia and New Zealand. Community and school-based programs are in place to support and encourage children and parents to develop and maintain health promoting lifestyles from birth. Community nurses play an important role in childhood health promotion, when working with pregnant women, newborn babies and mothers, fathers and other carers, preschool children and school-age children in a variety of settings. Community nurses should be aware of their responsibilities in ensuring children's rights are upheld.
