Abstract

The persistent shortage and narrow range of health professions represented in most areas outside of the metropolitan areas means there are few occupational role models available for students. It has an impact on their aspirations, and occupational learning from early childhood years when crucial career-related concepts and attitudes are formed.

To provide opportunities for students to learn about a wide variety of health professions, I undertook a year-long project as the basis for my PhD research, with a school of distance education servicing an area of outback Australia. Through this, I sought to identify student perceptions of, and attitudes and aspirations towards, careers in health with a view to informing and enriching their later career choices and addressing the shortage of health professionals in these areas.
