Abstract

Introduction: Recent increases in the degree offerings and enrolment numbers in clinical exercise physiology in Australia are placing high demand on placement supervisors to provide high quality learning experiences, potentially with limited training and resource support. The purpose of this study therefore was to report on the training and resource practices and needs of supervisors who facilitate clinical exercise physiology student placement supervision in Australia. The second purpose was to develop resource- and training-based recommendations that could provide efficiency and consistency around student placement supervision in clinical exercise physiology.

Methods: Eighty-four clinical placement supervisors throughout Australia provided responses to specific supervisor training and placement supervision resources questions, via an online survey.

Results: Most responding supervisors have had no formal supervisor training experience and would like to undertake future training via self-paced online, correspondence modules or via face-to-face training on work days. Common barriers to training included workload, time and cost. Supervisors reported inconsistency with receiving placement-based resources from universities and often developed their own resources. Supervisors indicated a preference for the provision of logistics- and curriculum-based resources to be developed.

Conclusion: Current practices associated with clinical exercise physiology placement supervision training and resources are varied. The authors recommend the development and implementation of nation-wide clinical exercise physiology placement supervisor training and feedback packages; and the development and implementation of minimum resources, clinical competency and assessment-based checklists to enhance the efficiency and consistency of student placement experiences throughout Australia.
