Abstract

[Extract] This study examines issues related to backpacker tourism in the Brazilin Amazon. While the Brazilian Amazon offers the potential for supporting a large range of nature-based tourism experiences such as jungle lodges, river cruises, sport fishing, bird watching and adventure tourism the region attracts relatively few visitors. The backpacker sector is particularly small. In part this is a consequence of the failure of the public sector both at national and local levels to support the nation's small backpacker sector. Most of the nation's tourism development has focused on mass tourism in the southeast cities and coastal areas of Brazil (Hampton 1998; Oliveira 2008; Scheyvens 2002).

This study reports on the potential to develop a backpacker sector in the Brazilian Amazon. The rationale for the study was the backpacking has the potential to support local community development using local capital and as a consequence generate local jobs and assist the achievement of positive environmental outcomes.
