Abstract

Universities globally are facing unprecedented government pressure to provide educational opportunities to a wider portion of the population. This complex imperative calls into question the very purpose of higher education institutions. As the academy grapples with the tensions inherent in navigating the spectra of theory and practice, 'real' and virtual spaces and preparing for work versus self-fulfilment and the generation of new knowledge, it is timely to reflect upon the challenges and opportunities for universities of, and for, the future. This plenary critically discusses the promises of widening participation in light of new technologies and design approaches to learning and teaching.
