Abstract

[Extract] As society increasingly understands the need for sustainable resource use and management, regional approaches to planning commonly are being proposed. Australia has a long history of involvement in such approaches, but success in the form of sustainable resource use outcomes has been limited. This paper reviews why regional approaches to resource use planning generally have failed. It then describes a new pilot project in Queensland's Central Highlands. The Central Highlands Regional Resource Use Planning Project (CHRRUPP) seeks to establish and to evaluate a more negotiated approach to regional planning for sustainable resource use.
