Abstract

The School of Creative Arts, James Cook University (JCU) has embarked on a significant upgrading of their creative arts programs condensing five named degrees into a Bachelor of New Media Arts (BNMA). The first intake occurred at the commencement of 2007 with about 100 students enrolling into the new course over two campuses. Coinciding with the introduction of the BNMA a small group of researchers secured funding to undertake a major project exploring Mental Models in First Year Students. This research has been successful in providing some early data on the types of students who undertake New Media Arts courses and how they correlate with other courses provided by the University.
