Abstract

Lithium disilicate glass ceramics (LDGC) are viewed as the future of all-ceramic dentistry for monolithic dental restorations, because they provide attractive aesthetics and mechanical strength. This study utilises nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy for testing LDGC to determine their mechanical properties. The nanoindentation hardness and Young's moduli of LDGC exhibited a significant indentation load dependence. These relatively nondestructive mechanical characterisation techniques may assist in better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of dental materials and thus facilitate the design and selection of robust materials for dental restorations.
