Abstract

[Extract] Today, at least 15% of the land area of Cape York Peninsula (also referred to CYP or 'the Peninsula' in this report) is the statutory responsibility of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). The existing and proposed protected areas of the Peninsula contain an outstanding array of conservation qualities and attributes of national and international significance. The natural heritage attributes of the region are well described in the literature and there is widespread support within Government and many community groups for the notion of World Heritage listing of appropriate parts of the Peninsula.

The Queensland Government has a responsibility to the people of Cape York Peninsula and the wider community to deliver on the 2004 election commitments outlined in the 'Protecting Queensland's Natural Heritage: Cape York's Outstanding Values' policy document (Team Beattie & Queensland Labor, 2004). Importantly, this document commits the Government to work with Traditional Owners to resolve tenure and cooperative management issues for state-owned lands both within and outside the protected area estate. This report investigates the resourcing and management of protected areas in Cape York Peninsula.
