Abstract

[Extract] Relatively large areas of freshwater wetland habitat have been retained within the Barratta Creek catchment particularly within the government developed Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme (formerly Burdekin River Irrigation Area). Within the context of the developed tropical coast of Queensland and the intensively developed coastal lands of the lower Burdekin River basin, the remnant wetlands of the Barratta Creek catchment have exceptionally high ecological and functional values which have been recognised by listings in the National Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. Despite having high values, these wetlands have generally not been actively managed and their condition is threatened by a range of management issues.
