Abstract

[Extract] While the contemporary image of piracy has been heavily influenced by the film and television industry, and before that by novelists, and portrayed as an activity that belongs to the past, the reality is that piracy still remains a problem in some regions of the world. The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has maintained statistics of piracy since 1984 and, in 2005, reported 266 attacks in which 152 persons were injured, 652 kidnapped and 11 remain unaccounted for.
