Abstract

Screengrab is an annual exhibition of screen based new media art curated from online submissions from around the world and submitted via the internet. The 2010 theme was, "Network".

The work in the exhibition represents the shortlisted entries for the Screengrab International New Media Arts Award sponsored by the School of Creative Arts (SoCA), James Cook University and the eMerge Media Space. The works for the inaugural award were curated by the SoCA Gallery Committee which is comprised of academic and professional staff.

Research Statement

Research Background The Screengrab award and associated exhibition was designed to bring cutting edge new media art to the North Queensland region. Works are curated internationally from entries which are submitted online from media artists and groups. The process is restricted to screen based media and the work is primarily motivated by the exhibition theme which itself is developed with an awareness of contemporary media art concerns. The 2010 theme is "Network".
Research Contribution Each year a theme is developed by Mitch Goodwin in consultation with the SoCA Gallery Committee. The theme is based on Goodwin's own research into new media theory and network culture and is often reflective of wider socio-cultural issues pertaining to digital media, mainstream media and contemporary political engagement.
Research Significance Screengrab is a rare exhibition in Australia and certainly in Queensland. It taps into the rich online culture of media arts production which is critically aware of contemporary cultural conditions and paradigms. Curating the short list for the International New Media Arts Award which doubles as the Screengrab Exhibition not only brings this work to new audiences but is an important annual snapshot of critical new media arts practice.
