Abstract

[Extract] Very early in their schooling, students are quizzed by teachers, friends and family members with the age-old question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" As young people answer the question, they are provided with much informal advice about what classes they need to take, where the best schools are for the careers in which they're interested, what grade point average they need to maintain, and who they might talk with in order to learn more about achieving their goal.
