Abstract

[Extract] In 2005, staff from the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences conducted a series of eight focus groups as part of the overall James Cook University (JCU) Study on Workplace Environment and Health at Zinifex Pty Ltd (Zinifex). This qualitative component of the workplace environment and health study aimed to describe the perceptions of Zinifex staff at Century Mine and the Karumba Port Operations towards occupational health and safety in their workplace in regards to: • the major types and sources of occupational health and safety hazards in their workplace; • the current management of identified occupational health hazards by Zinifex; and • solutions to improve work practices, workplace environments and the occupational health and safety hazards.
