Abstract

[Extract] Australasian researchers of tropical medicine currently stand at a crossroads. On one hand, and enormous expansion of scientific activity occurred following the Second World War, and long gone are the days when Australian journals could be dismissed containing 'mostly case reports on snake bite'. There will always be a niche for periodicals such as ours, given that specialist topics always require specialist journals, and society periodicals have an ongoing responsibility to communicate the ethos of their particular field. On the other hand, smaller journals incur a variety of dilemmas when compared to the larger titles, and biomedical publishing is being increasingly dominated by multinational companies. While the Annals of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine has a unique role to play in Australasian scientific literature, future development and expansion will no doubt be influenced by how difficult any improvements might actually be to implement. While there are many ways in which journal performance can be measured, perhaps the most important of these is exposure. Are enough people reading the Annals, and, are the people who wish to read our journal actually able to find it?
