Abstract

This chapter develops a new perspective on the role of anthropology and ethnographic fieldwork in deign processes. In particular it explores how ethnographic fieldwork combined with a critical holistic approach has the potential to shape design processes towards greater sensibility for the crafting potential of users in the context of social and materiel relations. We argue for a different division of labour between anthropologists and designers than has commonly been practiced in ethnographically inspired design and participatory design. Finally we look at the role of design within fieldwork and anthropology.
