Abstract

This digital image commemorates the extinction of the plant species Lindsaea pulchella var. blanda which once lived in the tropics. The "x" form has been used to signify extinct status of this plant. I have sought to depict Lindsaea pulchella var. blanda in an attractive manner to highlight the great loss we now experience due its passing. The possibility of a relationship with plant has been extinguished forever and the diversity of our world has been diminished as a result of this loss.

Research Statement

Research Background The capacity of visual art to communicate concerns about the impact of people on the habitat of other living entities forms the background to this artwork. Information from the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992, Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulation 2006 has been used to identify extinct plants in this region. Images from a botanical collection have been sourced and digitally manipulated to create the artwork.
Research Contribution The idea that art can be a source of understanding underpins the motivation for this artwork.I have sought to create an image of an extinct plant in a beautiful form, to engender reflection and to highlight the loss we have experienced due to its passing. The ‘x’ sign has been used to indicate the extinct status of this plant. The art work strives to increase awareness about the loss of the species.
Research Significance This work is significant because it has the potential to raise community awareness of the extinction of a plant species in the tropics. The visual form of the artwork creates a means of seeing what is lost. This artwork is significant because it contributes to the investigation of the potential for art to generate understanding.
