Abstract

Intergroup relations refers to the way in which people in groups perceive, Think about, feel about, and act toward people in other groups. Employing intergroup relations as a theoretical framework, this paper uses a New Zealand case to explore a group of older Chinese migrants' collective narratives on how to develop harmonious intergroup relations in a new and unfamiliar culture. This study is informed by a narrative approach. In this research, the term 'older Chinese migrant' refers to people who are currently staying in New Zealand with permanent residency or New Zealand citizenship, and who immigrated to New Zealand from China under the family reunion programme, and are 65 years of age and over. A total of 32 participants, 18 females and 14 males, ranging in age from 62 to 77 years were interviewed from 2008 to 2009. The findings reveal that safe neighbourhoods and connective communities function as spaces of care for the participants. These spaces offer comfort and care to the participants who are marginal in mainstream society, and aid in their personal and collective growth and identity construction. The participants develop harmonious intergroup relationships to foster and grow spaces of care, where they establish roots in a new cultural milieu and acquire a sense of belonging and security in their new home away from home.
