Abstract
The home environment is acknowledged as being central to the lives of older people. Since it is where the majority of older people prefer to live and spend a great deal of their time, the meaning of home for an older person is integral to the experience of successful ageing. Ageing at home has been linked to older people's health and wellbeing and has become a cornerstone of aged care policy and service delivery in developed and developing countries. Drawing from the work of environmental psychology and gerontology, in this article we describe current understandings of the experience of home for older people. We will explore the various aspects of home as outlined in the literature, including the physical, personal, social, and temporal dimensions of the older person's experience of home.
