Abstract

This composition came from collaboration with a didgeridoo performer in Sydney (Adam Hill). This is the first of three in a series. There is a focus on a pedal tone to reflect the sonic quality of the didgeridoo. Todd River runs through Alice Springs and represents a unique aspect to that geographic location for locals and the Aboriginal community in particular.

Research Statement

Research Background This composition is scored for a pop orchestra, which is essentially a big band with strings, woodwinds, French horns, additional percussion and low brass such as Tuba. This type of ensemble has been used extensively in the past supporting performers such as Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Dean Martin. A pop orchestra is an orchestra that plays popular music (generally traditional pop) and show tunes as well as well-known classical works. This configuration can also be found in musical theatre pit-orchestras as it utilizes the ensembles' ability to play contemporary and classical styles.
Research Contribution This piece represents an in-depth exploration of this instrumental combination and form. The contrast of the wind sections with the string section represents an opportunity to delve into the range and colour of the instruments as well the instrumentalist's ability to perform various technical aspects in the music.
Research Significance This composition utilizes a modern harmonic approach with an emphasis on jazz harmonic structures. There is a deliberate effort to de-emphasize diatonic harmonic conventions. In addition this piece explores the color combination of instruments as a section and in various pairing combinations such as Strings and Woodwinds.
