Abstract

"Referencing Troyon #2" by G James Brown is an oil painting on canvas, 80 x 100 cm. The painting was executed as a response to the etching, "Metairie Normande" by Francois Pierdon (1821-1904) after Constant Troyon. The painting addresses the subject, conceptual focus, style and approach shown in this early print from the standpoint of a contemporary North Queensland artist's perception of the tropical landscape and current issues. By design, the painting critiques the conventions of the early print by comparing them in visual terms to the artist's personal art practice.

Research Background	"Referencing Troyon #2" by G James Brown is an oil painting on canvas, 80 x 100 cm. The painting was executed as a second response to the etching, "Metairie Normande" by Francois Pierdon (1821-1904) after Troyon. The painting addresses the subject, conceptual focus, style and approach shown this early print from the standpoint of a contemporary North Queensland artist's perception of the tropical landscape and current issues. Research Contribution	This painting contributes to current research by helping to define some key attributes of current art practice in North Queensland. By intention, the painting clarifies some of the differences separating the practice of a North Queensland artist from those of early European and English printmakers.
Research Significance	This and another painting by Brown that also references the same etching, are most likely to be the first paintings to draw pictorial and conceptual connections between the working practices of a contemporary North Queensland artist and pictorial evidence perceived in "Metairie Normande" by Francois Pierdon (1821-1904) after Troyon.
