Abstract

A three movement piece for two guitars and flute based on Lydian Chromatic Concepts. Performed at Umbrella Studios Contemporary Art in conjunction with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (Nemo Music Publishing).

Research Statement

Research Background I have written for guitar and flute but not for two guitars and flute so it was a challenge to balance the three instruments. The piece is loosely based on the bay that is near my home where I spend time watching the change of seasons and mood relative to weather and tidal conditions.
Research Contribution This set of compositions was commissioned by a colleague at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. He requested a composition for two guitars and flute as he is a flute player and regularly performs with two different guitarists. The first movement, Rowes Bay Continuum Part 1 starts with the two guitars and then introduces the flute. The movement is a slower pace composition with all three instruments sharing the lead melodic emphasis equally. There is a shift of melody in the middle section of the first movement. The second movement, Rowes Bay Continuum Part 2 has more of a jazz groove to it and utilizes some challenging counterpoint in the middle section. The third movement, Rowes Bay Continuum Part 3 starts slow but accelerates in the middle section with dynamic chording by the guitars.
Research Significance In researching other compositions for two guitars and flute I found that there is lack of literature for this type of configuration. Encouraged by this revelation I endeavored to produce a substantial composition for this musical ensemble. It was my goal to produce a modern composition that used George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic concepts with a strong melodic emphasis.
