Abstract

'Memorial: the silence of extinction' is an artwork which commemorates the global loss of 27,000 plants and animals each year due to extinction. The artwork consists of 34 banners, each with 736 silk pockets. The total art work requires 51 metres of hanging space. People from around the world were invited to cut out a shape from a coloured piece of paper to commemorate the loss of a species. These shapes were placed in one a pocket in the banner. The Memorial project has been designed to heighten individual and community awareness of the annual global extinction rate.
